Coverage
Umbrella Insurance
A personal umbrella adds liability limits, usually in $1 million increments, above your underlying home, auto, and recreational policies once those limits are exhausted.
What a policy usually includes
- Excess liability over home, auto, and toys
- Defense costs in covered claims
- Some coverage for claims your base policies exclude, depending on carrier
What to watch for
- Carriers require minimum underlying limits before an umbrella will attach.
- Business exposures are generally excluded from personal umbrellas.
- Umbrellas are usually inexpensive relative to the limit purchased.
